Election Day Reminders

Jackson, MS—The 2014 Primary Election will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014.  Mississippians will cast a ballot for Congressional and Senatorial candidates in the party primaries.

“In some instances, the tone of campaign rhetoric may affect turnout on Election Day,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.  “We do not need go farther than the recent Memorial Day holiday than to remember the importance of the vote and our right, and obligation to cast a ballot.”

Party primaries are conducted by the Democratic and Republican parties.  Polls will be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on Election Day.

Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by the Circuit Clerk’s Office by Monday, June 2nd.

“Mississippi deserves to be well represented in Washington, D.C. Tuesday is the day for our citizens to choose their spokesperson on critical issues.  Candidate positions, and not special interest advertising, should earn your vote,” adds Secretary Hosemann.

Some tips for Election Day:

·         Identification:  ALL voters will have to present one of the following forms of acceptable photo identification in order to vote:

o   A driver’s license

o   A photo ID issued by a branch, department or entity of the State of Mississippi

o   A United States passport

o   A government employee ID card

o   A firearms license

o   A student photo ID issued by an accredited Mississippi university, college or community/junior college

o   A United States military ID

o   A tribal photo ID

o   Any other photo ID issued by any branch, department, agency or entity of the United States government or any State government

o   A Mississippi Voter Identification card

A voter may use an expired photo ID as long as it is an acceptable form of photo ID (see list above) and is not more than ten (10) years old. The expired ID must contain the name and photograph of the voter, and have been validly issued by the federal or a state government.

A voter who does not have photo ID on Election Day will be asked to vote by affidavit ballot at the polling place. The voter will then have five (5) business days to show an acceptable form of photo ID, or apply for a Mississippi Voter ID card, at the Circuit Clerk’s office. No voter will ever be turned away from the polls for failing to have acceptable photo ID.

·         Attire:  It is against the law for any candidate or candidate’s representative to distribute campaign literature within 150 feet of a polling location.  It is the position of the Office of the Secretary of State that wearing clothing with a candidate’s name and/or picture on it or other campaign paraphernalia within 150 feet of a polling location constitutes the posting of campaign literature and is prohibited.

·         Sample Ballots:  A 2014 Primary Election sample ballots are available on the Secretary of State’s website.
