OFFICIAL STATEMENT: Alleged Theft at Hinds County Election Commission Headquarters

Our office was notified today of a possible theft at the Hinds County Election Commission headquarters earlier this week. We are communicating with the Hinds County Election Commission and the Hinds County Sheriff's Office to gather concrete details.

Protecting the integrity of every legal vote cast is paramount, and I will do everything within my power to ensure our elections are safe and free of fraud.

RUNOFF FOR SEPTEMBER 22ND SPECIAL ELECTIONS - ELECTION DAY REMINDERS

JACKSON –  The polls are officially open for today's September 22nd special election runoff for Senate District 15, Senate District 39, House District 37 and House District 66. While polling places close at 7 p.m., any voter in line at 7 p.m. is entitled to cast a ballot. Eligible voters include those in Choctaw, Clay, Copiah, Hinds, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lowndes, Montgomery, Oktibbeha, Walthall and Webster Counties.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA INITIATIVE PUBLIC HEARING - TODAY IN JACKSON

JACKSON – Today, the Secretary of State's Office will host our fifth and final public hearing regarding Initiative Measure No. 65 and Alternative Measure No. 65A (medical marijuana). The hearing will take place at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the public hearing will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. All media outlets are invited to attend. 

CAMPAIGN FINANCE LATE FILERS LIST

(October 13, 2020 Special Runoff Elections)

JACKSON – In accordance with Mississippi Code Section 23-15-817, the Secretary of State’s Office is required to publish a list of all candidates for the Statewide or Legislative Office who failed to file a campaign disclosure report by the dates specified in Section 23-15-807(b).

Individuals who failed to timely file their campaign finance report by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, and still have not filed their report to date include:

2020 GENERAL ELECTION ABSENTEE REPORT - WEEK 2

JACKSON – As of Sunday, October 11, 2020, the Statewide Election Management System (SEMS) reported a total of 91,474 absentee ballots requested, 86,609 absentee ballots sent, and 58,796 absentee ballots received in the state of Mississippi for the 2020 General Election.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA INITIATIVE PUBLIC HEARINGS HATTIESBURG & MERIDIAN

JACKSON – This week, our office will host two public hearings regarding Initiative Measure No. 65 and Alternative Measure No. 65A (medical marijuana). The first hearing will take place on Wednesday, October 7, at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center in Hattiesburg. The second hearing will take place on Thursday, October 8, at the Meridian City Hall Auditorium in Meridian. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the public hearing will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. All media outlets are invited to attend. 

VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR 2020 GENERAL ELECTION - TODAY

JACKSON – Today, Monday, October 5, 2020, is the voter registration deadline for the 2020 General Election. If registering in person, Mississippians must do so before 5 p.m. today. If registering by mail, all voter registration applications must be postmarked by today.

Below are the guidelines to register to vote in the State of Mississippi: 

DEADLINE APPROACHING: HUMPHREYS AND SUNFLOWER COUNTIES TAX-FORFEITED LAND AUCTIONS

JACKSON - The deadline to place a bid in two online auctions of tax-forfeited properties in Humphreys and Sunflower Counties is one week away. Mississippians have the opportunity to bid on 129 parcels in Humphreys County valued at an estimated $759,000, and 148 parcels in Sunflower County valued at an estimated $468,953. All bids must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.

COVID-19 SAFETY PREPARATIONS FOR THE 2020 GENERAL ELECTION

JACKSON – Our office remains committed to ensuring local election officials have the necessary items to make voting precincts as safe as possible on Election Day. Today, the Mississippi National Guard assisted our office by distributing 117 palates of COVID-19 safety supplies with an estimated value of more than $542,000.

JACKSON – As of Sunday, October 4, 2020, the Statewide Election Management System (SEMS) reported a total of 66,495 absentee ballots requested61,367 absentee ballots sent, and 34,561 absentee ballots received in the state of Mississippi for the 2020 General Election.
