348 A BICENTENNIAL HISTORY OF MISSISSIPPI FIGHTING OKRA Delta State University was established by an act of Mississippi legislature in 1924. The school was the originally a teachers’ college training educators, but now the university boasts more than forty different majors. Delta State’s sports program is a point of pride. Women’s basketball has been a part of Delta State University’s history since the beginning of the school in the 1920s. Margaret Wade took the sport to another level of excellence, leading the Fighting Okra women through fifty-one consecutive victories and to three straight national championships. An award named after her, the Wade Trophy, is still given to the most outstanding women’s basketball player in the nation every year.
