Secretary Michael Watson Announces National Voter Registration Month

JACKSON, Miss. – Secretary of State Michael Watson joins fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in proclaiming September as National Voter Registration Month. During the month of September, the Secretary of State's Office, government agencies, and organizations across the nation will promote the importance of voting and the significance of keeping your voter registration information up-to-date.

"The right to vote is one of the greatest civil liberties in our country and registering to vote is the first step toward successfully participating in the electoral process. I'm proud of our continued efforts to help register all eligible Mississippians to exercise this civil duty," said Secretary Michael Watson.

In 2002, NASS members established September as National Voter Registration Month to focus on encouraging voter participation and increasing awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting.

The Secretary of State's Office is continuing the Voter Registration Road Trip which includes hosting voter registration drives across the state throughout September.

Scheduled stops include:

  • Northwest Mississippi Community College (9/15)
  • Millsaps College (9/17)
  • Hinds Community College (9/24)
  • Armed Forces Retirement Home, Gulfport (9/29)

This year, September 16 will be highlighted by NASS and other voter outreach groups as National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). Since its inception in 2012, more than 6 million Americans have either registered to vote or updated their voter registration on National Voter Registration Day.
